He wrote his most famous work in 731, just years before his death in 735 AD. One of his major legacies was the establishment of our modern dating system (from the birth of Christ forward). Records show that he had contact with other scholars and prominent people both in Britain and the continent his greatest work was dedicated to King Ceolwulf of Northumbria (Fiorentino). He took interest in writing and wrote about 40 books, his main interests being theology and history. He became a deacon early on in life and by the age of 30, he was ordained a priest. He lived in the Kingdom of Northumbria, where he spent his youth being exposed to religious surroundings and was educated to write in both Latin and English.

The “Venerable Bede” was a monk, scholar and prolific author, most famously An Ecclesiastical History of the English People ( Historia Ecclesiastica Gentis Anglorum), which is how he came to be regarded as the “Father of English History.”Ĭonsidering the little amount known about Bede, it is believed that he was born on the very monastery grounds where he would later live in Jarrow, England, in 672 or 673 AD (Fiorentino). Due to its focus on Anglo-Saxon history, it has been cited as a key foundational text in the forming of a national English identity (“Bede”).

Bede’s famous account begins with the invasion of the British Isles by Roman forces as such, it is considered one of the most important historical records documenting Roman rule, Anglo-Saxon settlement and the evolution of the Church on the island.
